Passau
Passau Score 7.5/10
We did not have a lot of time in Passau as the day started at Linz where we had the choice of an excursion to either Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov. This one was a tough decision but we chose the latter simply because it gave us a new country, being the Czech Republic, to cross off our bucket list. It was a good choice as it's an extremely picturesque town with even a couple of live bears in the moat of the castle & we did managed to find some great hot wine in one of the cafes. Unfortunately the Christmas market were not open for another few more days so our only opportunity that day was when we were dropped off at Passau to catch up with the Ship which had sailed on from Linz. It didn't help that we turned the wrong way to start with so we lost valuable time looking for St Stephens Cathedral where the market is situated. The cathedral made for an amazing backdrop and while it wasn't a huge market it was very busy with some interesting stalls. We gave it a half mark more because of this. This was our first German market & it was just opening as we got there, the mayor was giving a speech then the band burst into life. There were some unusual food stalls with 1/2 Meter sausages in a bun, chocolate bonbons made with a waffle base & round balls called snowballs which were not my favourite. They looked great but were a rather dry pastry that has been deep fried with a dusting of icing sugar. There were also nice looking cheese & salami stalls & of course the gluewein which was rather good.
